Tinctori is a community-based brand that has worked around natural dye and crafting since 2008. We have been helping people, brands, and companies align with nature. With our community, we have turned ancient techniques of natural dyeing and handcrafting to meet today’s needs. By aligning in this way, we honor the people who make and the nature we all come from.
Neighboring is a verb. We build and grow a perpetual connection with our neighbors; people and nature in Jambu, Semarang, Indonesia. Our community is shaped by many roles and local people; farmers, batik artisans, crafters, tailors, and local people with 70 people in total. Working with our community feels different from the usual hustle of work. It’s like ‘neighboring’ in a professional way as a daily worker in a rural area.
We have been farmers since starting our business in 2008. Our natural soul has been with us since the first time. We supported local batik makers by planting and harvesting indigo plants; Indigofera tinctoria and Strobilanthes cusia. Our Tinctori name is also taken from our signature plant; Indigofera tinctoria.
We do everything slowly because we follow nature. Using plants, wood, and fruits to dye the fabrics. We process the production by hand, giving a personal touch to every piece.
We see the process as a never-ending learning, and sometimes we can learn from other businesses, materials, and plants, and also includes synthetic dye. For us synthetic materials with the right application and with thoughtful design are sometimes a better choice of material. We always do research and development combining natural dye and synthetic to create beautiful colors with responsibility.
